The appearance of the anodized film is closely related to the surface condition prior to oxidation, which is determined by the chemical pretreatment (especially alkaline washing and chemical polishing).Of course, the surface state after chemical pretreatment essentially depends on the microstructure of the substrate, the type, size and distribution of intermetallic compounds, as well as the grain size and its orientation.These, in turn, are related to the alloy composition and processing.
2,Applications:
Alkali etching is a basic and important pretreatment in the anodizing of architectural aluminum panels and profiles.Alkali etching yields a detailed etching surface with no glossy satin finish, which is the result of a high percentage of diffuse reflection.Table 3 shows the electrochemical properties of intermetallic compound particles in aluminum alloys during alkali etching.Different intermetallic compounds and even the same compound with different particle sizes can have completely different electrochemical properties.There are two mechanisms for the formation of surface corrosion pits in aluminum alloys due to the presence of the second phase of intermetallic compounds: the second phase acts as a cathode (e.g., Al3Fe) causing the aluminum matrix around the particles to preferentially dissolve; and the second phase of intermetallic compounds particles is an anode (e.g., Mg2Si) relative to the aluminum matrix and preferentially dissolves.The presence of second-phase intermetallic compounds in aluminum alloys, regardless of whether they are cathodic or anodic with respect to the aluminum matrix, results in the formation of corrosion pits on the surface during alkali corrosion, which produces a lightless, diffusely scattered surface.The former forms corrosion pits due to localized dissolution of the aluminum surrounding the second phase; the latter forms corrosion pits due to direct dissolution of the intermetallic compound.Therefore we can expect that the bright effect of chemical or electrolytic polishing is hardly reflected after anodizing of multiphase aluminum alloys.
